          The Yale Emerging Climate Leaders Fellowship recognizes exceptional professionals from developing and emerging economies who are advancing impactful solutions in climate action, sustainability, and clean energy. For its 2026 cohort, Yale selected 16 global leaders from thousands of applicants to participate in a five-month program featuring immersive learning sessions, leadership development, and international dialogues. The fellowship begins in February at Yale’s campus in New Haven and culminates in an in-person event in Paris.

         Nascent Technologies Corp. was recently featured in BusinessWorld Online, highlighting the development of NOVA, a sodium-ion starter battery designed as a safer, more durable, and sustainable alternative to lead-acid.
         &#xD;

          In the interview, President and CTO Joey Ocon and Business Development Manager and R&amp;amp;D Scientist Joshua Santiago explained how NOVA addresses the shortcomings of lead-acid batteries by offering longer cycle life, intrinsic safety, and the use of abundant, non-toxic materials. Field trials with fleet vehicles are planned this year, with commercial rollout targeted for 2026.

          COO and Head of Electrochemistry Maricor Divinagracia-Luzadas emphasized that sodium-ion technology provides strong thermal stability in hot climates and eliminates the use of critical and toxic metals, while noting that it is best seen as a complement to existing battery chemistries.

          “It’s really looking at ESS in general for the other value that it offers, just aside from the savings. It’s resilience, reliability, especially for these crucial facilities”, said Flores, highlighting the broader value of ESS in stabilizing power quality, especially as solar adoption grows.

          He also discussed the barriers to wider ESS adoption in the commercial and industrial (C&amp;amp;I) sector, including the absence of clear revenue models and limited supportive policies. “The incentives now are more indirect, like importation incentives… So there’s not much on the revenue side or revenue options for C&amp;amp;I,” Flores adds.

Signed on September 14, 2023, this collaboration agreement grants team members access to two cutting-edge research facilities: the Laboratory of Electrochemical Engineering (LEE) at the Department of Chemical Engineering and the Power Electronics Laboratory (PEL)  at the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute. Nascent Batteries will be providing research funding to kick off a series of innovative activities aimed at pioneering developments in sodium-ion batteries (NIBs) and lithium-ion battery management systems (BMS).

Additionally, it seeks to explore the application of lithium-ion batteries in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), including the benchmarking of off-the-shelf BMS modules and the design of a kWh-level battery pack.

Under the guidance of Facility Manager Engr. Mark Baldelobar, the renovation began with meticulous planning in January 2023, involving updates in electrical design, floor planning, and budgeting. The contract for this significant upgrade was awarded to Triple-D, led by Engr. Dante.

         Nascent Technologies' energy storage systems division head, Dr. BenJeMar-Hope Flores, and team member Tony Diccion Jr, M.Sc., recently participated in the prestigious Science, Technology, and Innovation Cooperation Program (STIC) Research Grant Application 2023. The STIC program is renowned for encouraging applied research that has practical implications or the potential to influence policy in ASEAN member states. This international competition, held from July 25 to August 11, 2023, attracted numerous innovative research proposals from across the ASEAN region. 
         &#xD;

  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Dr. Flores and Mr. Diccion engaged in an intensive Coursera electronics specialization course as part of their participation, focusing on cutting-edge technological concepts. Their final submission, a proposal for a Battery Management System (BMS) using Digital Twin technology, showcased their expertise and commitment to advancing energy storage solutions. Despite their hard work and innovative approach, their proposal was not selected among the Top 35 in ASEAN.

         Nascent participated in RITTD's 'Bootstart: Bootcamp for Startups' last March 28 to 31 at the HIFI Incubator of De La Salle St. Benilde. RITTD is the technology transfer and commercialization team of DOST-PCIEERD. The 4-day event included business lectures, mentoring sessions, and proposal writeshops by RITTD and Embiggen Group. The workshop was held to guide startups in their application for the Startup Grant Fund Program this year. The Nascent team is constantly on the lookout for training and grants to further expand its resources and capabilities.

         Engr. Michael Castro's garnered second place at the National Academy of Science and Technology Talent Search for Young Scientists (NAST-TSYS) held on April 21, 2023 for his study entitled “Techno-economic and financial analyses of hybrid renewable energy system microgrids in 634 Philippine off-grid islands: Policy implications on public subsidies and private investments.”
         &#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          This research involved the modeling and simulation of hybrid renewable energy systems (HRES) for over 600 inhabited Philippine off-grid islands, or islands that are otherwise too distant or expensive to connect to the main grid. Strategies and policy recommendations for the deployment of HRES in these islands were then formulated from technical and financial models. An important aspect of this research is the integration of batteries and energy storage technologies – which are being developed at Nascent Storage Technologies Solutions Corp – since they ensure a reliable power supply by efficiently storing excess renewable energy during periods of low generation or high demand.
         &#xD;

         Nascent Technologies' leadership team, comprising President and Chief Scientist Officer Dr. Joey Ocon, Chief Commercial Officer Dr. Dj Donn Matienzo, and Energy Storage Systems Division head Dr. BenJeMar-Hope Flores, recently participated in the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Startup Grant Fund 2023 (Cycle 1), held from May 2 to May 24, 2023. This initiative aligns with the Innovative Startup Act (ISA) aimed at fostering and developing the Philippine Startup Ecosystem by providing incentives and alleviating challenges for innovative new businesses.
         &#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          The team engaged in the DOST grant writing bootcamp and submitted proposals for the Enhancement of CapaciKit, a project under Nascent Technologies' umbrella. Additionally, they coordinated effectively with the project manager throughout the process. While the team successfully passed the initial screening phase, they did not progress to the Technical Panel defense. Feedback from the project manager highlighted a need for initial market validation for the product, indicating an area for further development and research. This participation underscores Nascent Technologies' commitment to innovation and growth within the Philippine entrepreneurial ecosystem, and the experience gained from this process is invaluable for future endeavors.

         On 13 January 2023, Nascent had started an outsourcing agreement with Nextech Batteries, a global leader in Lithium-Sulfur Battery (Li-S) technology. This agreement will allow Nextech Batteries to utilize Nascent's expertise in areas such as materials development, and electrochemical characterization. With this partnership, Nextech Batteries aims to enhance its operational efficiency and accelerate the development of its innovative products.
